The fact that primary school is important was already known during the reign of Maria Theresa. The latter introduced the first school law in 1774, making primary school compulsory. It was a free educational institution where classes were held in the mother tongue. It was attended by children of all ages, regardless of class or class. The school was popular, three-grade, so-called trivial, because it taught religion, reading and writing, and arithmetic.

Jurij Coklar, a priest, founded the Ribnica Sunday School in 1780, where he first taught religion and later reading. The school was entirely under the jurisdiction of the Vuzenica Archdiocese and had about ten pupils. From 1786 the school was continued by priests, among them Franc Penhar and Pavel Wončina. After 1810, arithmetic was introduced by Chaplain Markus Hamerlitz. In 1806, the first real teacher Jurij Reš came to Ribnica na Pohorju, and at that time the number of students began to grow, and the school became a regular public trivial. In 1807, the chaplaincy assigned the school its own school building. After Reš, who taught in Ribnica na Pohorju until 1811, came other teachers, among them Franc Tantscher and Jurij Wradatsch, of whom the school diary from 1816 has been preserved, where it is written that

In September 1822, the Lavantine diocesan consistory appointed Andrej Novak from Dobrla vas to the position of temporary teacher at the Ribnica school. Novak soon became a full-time teacher and worked here for 47 years, which is a very long time for that time. From the records about him, we can conclude that he was a religious, diligent and faithful man, which is also reflected in the increase in the number of students. In 1842 there were almost ninety of them and they had to add another classroom, which was built at his own expense by Gradišnik, the master of Ribnica and the great .The number of students was growing and Novak asked for help because it exceeded the number of hundreds. The diocese would suit him if he paid an assistant out of his own pocket, which, given the already poor conditions, was not possible. Novak persevered and in 1856 renewed the application. He explained that with local help, he would provide all the care to the assistant teacher. The diocese sent him Martin Zupančič, who remained in Ribnica na Pohorju until 1860.
In accordance with the church school law of 1805, religious institutions were responsible for supervising education. The pastor was in charge of parish supervision and could appoint a school superintendent. Giuseppe Girometha, an Italian immigrant to Josipdol, was named first, followed by Ignac Kunčnik after 1831, Jurij Pogelscheg from 1840 to 1846, Peter Pachernigg from 1846 to 1858 and Karl Puhr from 1859 to 1867. The school chronicle states that after 1869 the post of superintendent remained vacant because the ecclesiastical school superintendent rejected the candidate Rudolf Tommasi. The chronicle also contains records of the learning achievements of the students of the Ribnica school, written in the reports of the district school supervision in Vuzenica. They evaluate the reading ability of students, the teaching of the German language, the observance of various punctuation marks, ie Slovenian spelling and the student's success. Church supervision was particularly attentive to lessons in the mother tongue, including at the Ribnica school, thanks to Slomšek, who prevented the spread of Germanization. However, there are also cases of complaints that the Ribnica school neglects German language teaching too much and that it should be taught in German, which would benefit all those who would like to continue their education in science, art, economy and education. As well as those who want to learn to be craftsmen or will be drafted into the army, where all commands are exclusively in German. Farmers were also involved so that they could do business with people from German counties. It is written that we want to remain Slovenes, but we want German to be taught in all three classes of the parish school in Ribnica na Pohorju. As the High Provincial Committee did not respond to the complaint, the following was addressed directly to the Imperial-Royal Ministry of Education in Vienna: June 6, 1866: The Imperial Ministry of Education and Culture is pleased to authorize us to teach at the school in Ribnica na Pohorju that in the 1st and 2nd In the 3rd grade, it is taught in a mixed language, ie German and Slovene, and in the 3rd grade only in German, instead of the Slovene language, which has been introduced from all parts of the world and which neither the teacher nor the students can fully understand. Despite the fact that the complaint was sent to the High Imperial-Royal Ministry of Education in Vienna, it did not bear fruit. On 18 February 1868, the Imperial-Royal Radlje District Office announced that they supported the current classes in Ribnica na Pohorju and found no reason to rearrange the classes. Textbooks should remain the same, except in the 3rd grade, II is also allowed. a German language tutorial next to a large Slovene-German textbook. German terminology should be introduced at the same time as Slovene terminology in arithmetic lessons, and religious education should be conducted as introduced by the parish.

A letter from the consistory presidency informs us about the work of the Ribnica Sunday school in the school chronicle: April 23, 1852: It is also evident in Ribnica that the Sunday school is doing very well with the activities of catechist Josef Schocher. The weekly weekly school (Werktagsschule), in contrast to the first with all 112 students, continues to follow the old tracks. Instead of reporting which subjects are taught, which students excel, the teacher still prefers to complain about the poor economic situation of the school, noting that on this basis it will sooner or later slip to the level of infamous private. Two years later, the consistory reported on the success of the Ribnica Sunday school, stating: December 27, 1854: The success of the semester exam of the school in Ribnica na Pohorju showed more than satisfactory condition in both religious education and other subjects.

Current school expenses were partly paid by the municipality and partly by the patron as the deputy of the state. It means that the costs were paid by the Vuzenica parish and the manor estate of Bukovje near Dravograd. In Ribnica na Pohorju, in accordance with the new school law, in 1864 they formed their own school parish-municipal committee. Anton Jellen and Josef Grögl from Ribnica, Ignaz Sgerm and Andreas Grögel from Janžev Vrh and Josef Zapečnik from Hude Kot were elected. Anton Jellen was elected President. The board in the school building failed to make the most urgent repairs, the only timely care was to supply the school with firewood. The committee, which was incapable anyway, quickly came to an end.

The highest school laws were passed and confirmed on May 25, 1868, February 8, and May 14, 1869, and laid the foundations of Austrian and Styrian education on new foundations. The district school authority was re-formed on February 8, 1869. The district school council was formed, in which Lukas Držečnik, Josef Feschofer from Ribnica na Pohorju, Ignaz Sgerm from Janžev Vrh, Josef Zapečnik and Franz Pfeifer from Ribnica na Pohorju were elected. Hudega Kota, and Rudolf Tomassi was appointed local school inspector. Superintendent Andrej Novak and Pastor Maksimilijan Globočnikter also became members of this council. Novak was replaced by teacher Martin Regoršek. On January 1, 1870, Mihael Nerat was ceremoniously appointed permanent superintendent.
